Donza ran to Katryn's side as the knight's head rolled across the alley and his body clanged noisily to the ground. Katryn turned slowly toward her, sword jutting from her side, black fluid dribbling from under her helm, and running freely from her armpit, down her breastplate and her leg. She held her blood-slicked sword limp at her side. "Turon's balls," sputtered Katryn, black froth coming from her mouth. "That really hurt."

"Kat, are you okay?" asked Donza, grabbing Katryn's armoured shoulders. "Are you weak or dizzy?"

"Yes. Both." She looked down at herself, her armour rattling as she took a clumsy step sideways to keep her balance. "I'm leaking, Don. Gods, this hurts more than last time."

Donza reached up and pulled off Katryn's helmet. The rush of cold, fresh air shocked Katryn awake. Her hair was stuck to her head and face by sweat and the blackish fluid that dribbled from her nose and mouth with every laboured breath. She saw the liquid running down her breastplate, and felt its sticky warmth soaking through her clothes. Katryn grimaced, and spat out some of the black ichor. "That tastes terrible. Is that mine? Do I need that?"

Holding the helm in one hand, Donza pushed Katryn's sweat-slicked hair away from her face. "I was scared, Kat. Can you move? I can fix this, but not here."

Black fluid was still dribbling from Katryn's nose. "He thought he was going to kill me." She tried to laugh, but only coughed up more fluid. "Stupid knight, I'm already dead."

Donza looked behind them. Sounds of yelling were coming from the direction of the inn. At their feet, the dead knight's blood was pooling around the end of his severed neck.

Katryn tried to lean forward, looking down at herself. She was covered in rivulets of black fluid mixed with spattered blood. "Can't take the main street looking like this." She swayed on her feet, looking up at Donza. "I'm a bit dizzy. Can't think. Where do we…"

"Let's go," said Donza. "We'll go where dead people always go. The catacombs."
